The No.1 Key to Happiness

seeker of truth

follow no path

all paths lead where

truth is here

- e. e. cummings

Ever since I was introduced to these lines in my English Literature class at St. Xavier's College in Mumbai, they went on to become the motto of my life. I am taking the name of my college in full form, because I owe a great deal of my education and appreciation for the fine qualities of the English language to this dynamic and liberal institution.

Coming back to the poem, if you read more of e. e. cummings' poetry, you will realise that his poems represent simple life truths in simple forms. cummings is an American poet who was revolutionary in his writing style. He refused to deploy any artifice in the language. At a time when metre, rhythm and complexity were the underlying criteria for "good" poetry, he did away with punctuation and any clear structure. You will notice these attributes in the poem Seeker of Truth as well.

Listen here

In fact, he became so known by this style of poetry, that his name - e. e. cummings - was almost always written in lower case too.

In cummings' rebellion against form, he created his own style. He let his poems become the meaning, in and of themselves. More importantly, he put the onus of poetry on the reader. You can read the poem non-stop, give it your own rhythm, punctuate it where you think necessary, and what's more you can interpret it the way you like - you needn't look up dictionaries or read up history to understand the allusions - because there aren't any - you simply have to respond to the poem the way you feel best.

Language can be like that - simple and easy to use and interpret. Life can be like that too - if we choose not to complicate it and put too many full-stops or commas. I can already hear you say - cummings had creative license, not all of us do, we're not poets...

But then ask yourself honestly, do you really not have creative license over your life? Can you not change its form if and when you want to?

I firmly believe you can.

And that's the reason why this poem with four lines resonates with me so much. Every time I get let down by life, people or situations, I realise I don't have to look very far for happiness or meaning, for change or direction. It's all within me to change the nature of an experience. Happiness is not "out there", in some remote Utopian land, devoid of hardships and conflict, but happiness is "right here".

This really is the biggest "truth" - no matter where you go and what you do to seek truth, happiness or anything else, the honest to God fact is that - it all lies within you.

These may seem like esoteric lines from a self-help book. I may seem like one more person giving the same gyaan in a different package. But in reality, when you absorb the truth of these lines they can change your perception of the most daunting obstacle in your life.

They can help you look inward, help you find solutions within you and change the path of your life.

If you realise that the key to happiness lies within you, you will realise that you need to go nowhere to seek it... all you need to do is look within. Look within for contentment, look within for purpose, look within for peace and look within for love.

There is really no one out there who can take you closer to the truth. That's what philosophers from across the world will tell you. That's what even gurus from India keep teaching. The same truth is reflected in yoga as well, a tradition we celebrated last weekend on 21st June - the first International Yoga Day.

The biggest truth is for you to believe in yourself, in your own powers and strengths, in your own abilities and dreams, in your own purpose and mission.

When you become aware of yourself and your own potentialities, you become aware of the universe and its great potentialities. When you have no need for artifice or decoration, when you keep it straight and simple, when you delete all the complications and punctuations from your life, you will find a smooth and meaningful existence.

You will have no path to follow, because you yourself are the path, the journey and the destination. When such a truth dawns upon you, you won't need anyone to give you gyaan, you may not even need to read my e-letters anymore or listen to my podcasts...

but please don't stop yet, let the seeking continue for me and for you.

If whatever you have mentioned is implemented in totality by making concerted effforts;it will change ones life for better. But one has to realise that there is truth and only truth in this world.Satyamev Jayate.

Identifying out true calling is a challenging task because our minds have been conditioned by our belief systems.Seeking the inner truth can be accomplished only if we learn to question our beliefs and value systems. We must slow down, find time and space for solitude, reflect and meditate to see within. This is a spiritual practice that can be achieved by constant efforts from our side. When spirituality becomes a habit and not a passing fad, we unshackle ourselves from the constraints of self-limiting beliefs. Thanks for the inspiring podcast.

Our birth itself a 'fruit' or result of our past Karma is of the nature of " suffering and enjoyment ". It is described as " dhukka misrathvam". Truth,Knowledge and Limitless is Brahman.thus Truth is first and foremost in getting at the Truth.one has to look inwards to understand as " Mere Knowledge" that can not be identified like an Object. Truth alone is all pervading and everlasting and is beyond any description. One should approach a learned Guru who can help you understand by way of Knowledge alone your identity ( for sake of identifying you with mortal body with physical and mental faculties. " You are the real Truth. Rest are all modification. Thus one must put effort to know Truth. When the universe was created it is said " Brahma Satyam Jagath ( the world) Mithya. According to Hindu philosophy " nothing comes from nothing". YOu HAVE TO SEEK THE TRUTH.

Very informative, inspiring, excellent article. One should take the life as it comes to him. However, just because of this, one should not stop working/moving forward. Make it a practice to recite GAYATRI MANTRA as many times as one can. The person who recites this Mantra makes a Prayer to the ALMIGHTY to make his Budhhi (power to think) further improve, improve and improve. It is one's own thinking which makes him great or let's him down. Having Self-Confidence in every matter is the key to success. Regular introspection within yourself is required. To the extent possible, one should not speak lies.

Introspection WITHIN ones self as to whether he is HONEST & SINCERE for self and society is vital as we find the same person to be JACKYL & HIDE at times.Accountability and Faith in HIM should make people TALK within and BE HAPPY.

Inside-out approach is not new & by now is more or less a truism across the world. Problem is that it needs to be internalised & consciously applied in one's day to day existence which many people are not patient to do or just not inclined. The appeal of external instant objects of pleasure & sensationalism are easier to go after than to look inward, introspect, & live out life with the learning & awareness that comes from such thoughtfulness.

Yes very true, but how many of us can walk the path defined by nature, the problem is today's man think is he has the capacity to define and impose his own laws which often leads to disaster. In an attempt to to make it simple and straight he looses the path and forget what is right.Let's keep it straight and simple.

It is easy to say believe in yourself and carry on your journey. What happens in reality is that you are badgered by self doubts and feelings of inadequacies ,in a rudderless voyage.Recently I read a blog by one Anand Satheesh who exhort you not to try to become any one else. You are what you are destined to become.you do not have to try to become. You blossom into what you are intended to be.This is a liberating thought. One is freed from the burden to become something as per the expectations of someone or complying with the machinations of the society.
